Distance: 12Km Extreme Challenge: EXTREME ELEVATION (over 7,000’) Extreme II: Inspiration Point: 0.6+0.3=0.9 AVA Special Event Programs: Trail (4C): Walk from the crater rim down on well defined sandy, gravel trail into Haleakala’s crater floor. View eerie volcanic landscapes as you meander past prehistoric vents, one of a kind plants and possibly see a nene, the local goose found only in this area. The trail crosses the crater floor and exits out the eastern slope, climbing through a rain forest of huge ferns to the rim. This walk requires two vehicles unless you return as you entered. Lahaina City Historic Whaling PortTake a trim, tidy New England whaling town, plunk it in the middle of the Pacific, sketch in some rainbow-crowned mountains, and add a generous helping of palm trees. Stir in the biggest Buddha outside of Asia, a banyan tree the size of a city block, and a history that reads like an epic novel, and you might come close to defining Lahaina, Maui.

Hana— Kuloa Loop

Extreme Challenge: Does not qualify Trail (2B): The pools of Ohe’o offer a pleasant hike along the meandering stream up to Waimoku Falls. This trail goes up from the Kuloa Ranger Station and an ancient Hawaiian archeological site overlooking the Pacific Ocean, past several natural pools, a huge Banyon tree, through a bamboo forest, to the spectacular water falls. Kihei –Cape Hanamanoia Lava Flow/Kings Highway Walk

Extreme Challenge: Does not qualify Extreme II: no peaks bagged on this one AVA Special Event Programs: Walking America’s Trails Trail (1C): Walk on a defined trail through a lava field among four foot high stacks of old volcanic lava with views of the Pacific Ocean and Haleakala Mountain. This trail is out in the open with a few shady spots along the route. Meandering through the lava mounds the trail leads to the old Kings Highway used to herd cattle down to Keawanaku Bay for loading and unloading onto ships. After a respite at the bay, return to the start location at La Perouse Bay’s small parking lot and site of an original historic village. Don't forget your swimming gear as snorkeling here is a must. Finally, if you come early in the morning, you can also catch a view of spinner dolphins at play. This trail is through very sharp lava flows that can scrape shoes and cut hands and legs. It is recommended that a good walking stick be used to keep you steady, gloves to protect hands, long pants for leg protection, and boots for protection of feet.
